End: Adirondack Loj
Peaks Climbed: Nye, Street
Today was a nice day. I'm staying at the Adirondack Loj tonight.
This morning I walked about a mile or two down the road to get to the Adirondack Mountain Club's property on Heart Lake. Here, there is the Loj, campsites, and an information center. It's a very popular spot for people to stay and for people to use as a trailhead. When I got here I checked if there was room at the Loj, and decided to stay in the bunkhouse.
Then I went to climb Street and Nye Mountains. Like the trail up Esther, the trail up to Street and Nye is not officially marked or maintained, but it receives enough visitors that the trail is obvious to see. There were some views near the summit of Nye, and limited views at the top of Street. The summits were marked by small plastic discs that were nailed high up on trees.
I saw about ten other people during the hike. I met one guy on the top of Street who was working on completing all 46 high peaks. As I left, he took out his cell phone to call his wife. Then I returned to the Loj, where I had left most of my stuff. I had lunch, took a shower, and read in the Loj's Great Room (a big lounge with a fireplace, hand-made chairs, and a small collection of books and games.
The hike today, again, took longer than I expected. I'm used to hiking at a pace of 3 or 3.5 miles per hour. But now that I have to climb these peaks, I can't go as fast.
I ate dinner while watching the sunset on Heart Lake. It was very pretty. There are only two other people staying in the bunkroom tonight - a mother and daughter pair. I've barely seen them so we haven't really spoken to each other. They're out visiting colleges.
Pretty tired now, even though I didn't spend the whole day hiking. Though I have gotten stronger on this trip, my body has taken a beating. It will be nice when I can take a long break and let it recover. But now, the final push to the end.
